With instruction and practical training in line with legal, workplace and community considerations, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and other Australian national peak clinical bodies, this first aid course teaches the skills and knowledge to recognise emergencies and provide immediate and effective first aid treatment to any person suffering a sudden illness or injury.

You will learn basic anatomy and physiology and the differences between adults, children and infants relating to CPR, the importance of the chain of survival, written and verbal reporting of incident details, reviewing incidents to improve your own skills, recognising psychological impacts, and seeking help as required.

What you’ll learn

  • Assess the casualty and make the scene safe
  • Access emergency services and use first aid resources
  • Perform CPR and use a defibrillator
  • Administer an autoinjector for anaphylaxis and asthma medication
  • Assist a choking casualty
  • Immobilise envenomation, fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
  • Manage non-life-threatening bleeding and shock

Entry requirements

Prerequisite: none. This class includes HLTAID009, HLTAID010 and HLTAID011.

You must have the physical capacity to complete two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor and rescue breathing on manikins.

You need a device and internet access for the pre-course online study.

Course duration

Online theory completed before class, then about two hours face-to-face practical. Express afternoon classes are available.

Course delivery

Online with face-to-face assessment at Tweed Heads South, or at your workplace.

  • HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support
  • HLTAID011 Provide first aid

Certificate renewal

First aid is renewed every 3 years (36 months). The CPR unit inside this certificate (HLTAID009) should still be refreshed every 12 months.

Assessment

  • Online multiple-choice theory before class
  • CPR on an adult (AED and recovery position) and on an infant
  • First aid incident report from a simulated scenario
  • Anaphylaxis, asthma, choking, bleeding and shock, nosebleed
  • Fracture and dislocation, sprain and strain, envenomation
