The Story Behind the Name:
It is a common question from locals and local business owners:
Why is a business named after a Queensland border town operating out of a New South Wales business park?
The answer is a 21-year journey of local growth, shifting coastlines, and a commitment to keeping first aid training accessible for the Lower Gold Coast, Tweed Heads, and Northern Rivers communities.
Consequently, here is the story of how Coolangatta First Aid found its perfect training home.
2005: Humble Beginnings in Coolangatta
The story begins in early 2005 right in the heart of Coolangatta. At that time, the original founders saw a massive need for reliable, high-quality CPR, First Aid for local businesses and residents along the border. Therefore, they opened a small, dedicated training room in Coolangatta.
For many years, the business thrived because locals loved the convenience of getting certified right in town. However, as the Gold Coast grew, Coolangatta transformed dramatically.
What was once a sleepy surf town quickly became a bustling tourist hub. High-rise apartments went up, and street parking simultaneously became incredibly difficult for students. Furthermore, commercial rents began to soar.
Faced with skyrocketing overhead costs and stressed students arriving late because they couldn’t find a park, the original owners made a strategic choice. As a result, they packed up and moved just across the border to a training venue in the Tweed Heads South business park.
While it was a brilliant move for logistics, it left them with a dilemma: Should they change the business name? Ultimately, they decided against it. This was because everyone on the border already knew and trusted the Coolangatta First Aid brand, so the iconic name stayed.
2014: Passing the Torch to a New Era
By 2014, the business was ready for its next chapter. A second owner purchased the company, inheriting a stellar reputation and a loyal database of local schools, tradies, and healthcare workers.
Recognising the strength of the brand and the convenience of the Tweed Heads South location, the second owner chose to keep everything exactly as it was. Consequently, for the next seven years. Coolangatta First Aid cemented its status as the go-to provider for Lower Gold Coast and Northern Rivers first aid certificates.
2021: A Pandemic, Current Owners, and Room to Grow
In 2021, right in the middle of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the current owners took the reins. Taking over a face-to-face training business during a time of social distancing and lockdowns was no small feat. However, they were determined to keep the essential service running safely.
As lockdowns lifted, the demand for essential worker training skyrocketed. Due to this sudden influx of students, the new owners quickly realised that their existing training room was bursting at the seams. To teach lifesaving skills effectively, they clearly needed more breathing room.
Driven by a vision to provide the best training experience on the coast. They relocated the business. In particular, they shifted into the large, modern warehouse building it occupies today in Tweed Heads South.
Where Coolangatta First Aid Stands Today
Today, Coolangatta First Aid successfully bridges the gap between two states. While the name pays homage to its 2005 Queensland roots, its spacious Tweed Heads South warehouse offers the ultimate convenience for students.
By moving to Tweed, the business effectively solved the biggest headaches for its students:
- Abundant parking: Free, at-the-door parking means you never skip a beat before a class starts.
- Larger training facility: Air-conditioned, professional warehouse spaces allow for comfortable, hands-on practical assessments.
- Easy highway access: Ideal for students travelling from down south in Byron Bay or up north from Southport.
