What You’ll Learn
This course provides practical training for people working in education and care settings. During the course, you’ll learn how to respond to first aid emergencies in line with workplace requirements, Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, and other recognised Australian clinical standards.
Furthermore, you’ll learn how to identify illness or injury, contact emergency services, and provide safe first aid treatment using approved action plans, equipment, and resources.
CPR and Emergency Response Skills
You’ll develop practical skills in CPR, defibrillation, and the use of an adrenaline auto-injector for anaphylaxis. In addition, you’ll learn how to assist with asthma emergencies, manage bleeding and shock, and provide care for fractures, sprains, strains, dislocations, and envenomation.
Caring for Children and Infants
You’ll also learn basic anatomy and physiology, together with the key differences between adults, children, and infants when providing CPR and first aid. As a result, you’ll gain the confidence to manage an infant or child with an acute illness or respond when emergency ambulance assistance is required.
Incident Reporting and Ongoing Care
The course also covers incident reporting, documentation, and debriefing to improve future emergency responses. Finally, you’ll learn how to recognise the emotional impact of emergencies, support children after an incident, and communicate effectively with parents, carers, and emergency services.
Entry Requirements
Participants must have the physical capacity to perform the practical demonstrations, such as 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor and performing rescue breathing techniques on manikins.
Online study: Students must have access to a computer, smartphone, tablet or other electronic devices with access to the internet to complete the online/ pre-course studies.
Course Duration
Online with face-to-face duration – 2 hrs.
The online work must be completed before you attend the face-to-face training.
Course Delivery
This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at a facility organised by the training provider.
Assessment Requirements
Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Assessment Activities
Performance tasks and practical scenarios:
Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)
Complete a first aid incident report form based on the simulated first aid scenario
- Theory assessment online: A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions, to be completed prior to your practical training.
- Class Practical completed on your training day
- Perform CPR on an adult (incl. the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)
- Complete a first aid incident report form based on the simulated first aid scenario
- Perform CPR on a child
- Perform CPR on an infant
- Manage a child casualty with anaphylaxis
- Manage a child casualty with asthma
- Manage a choking child and infant casualty
- Manage a child casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, requiring minor wound cleaning
- Manage a child casualty with a nosebleed
- Manage a child casualty with a fracture and dislocation
- Manage a child casualty with a sprain and strain
- Manage a child casualty with envenomation (snake/ funnel-web spider bite)

Theory assessment: A written assessment online consisting of multiple-choice questions.

Students are required to complete a self-evaluation against the following core skills as part of the enrolment process. This will allow your trainer to understand any additional support that may be required during the course delivery and assessment.

Numeracy: I can use basic counting or timing, like counting chest compressions or using a timer.
