Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency that can lead to death. With urgent medical care to restart the heart, survival is possible. Quick decision making is required to recognise and assess a cardiac emergency, call for medical assistance and perform CPR procedures which will increase the chance of survival for a person who is unconscious and not breathing normally.

In this CPR course you will learn these skills, in line with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, including using an AED, how to rotate first aiders with minimal interruptions to compressions, and what to do if the casualty regurgitates or vomits. The course also covers handing the casualty over to emergency services, reviewing an incident, and recognising psychological impacts on yourself and other rescuers.

What you’ll learn

  • Use an automated external defibrillator (AED)

  • Manage regurgitation or vomiting during CPR

Entry requirements

Prerequisite: none.

You must have the physical capacity to complete two minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor and rescue breathing on manikins.

You need a computer, smartphone or tablet with internet access to finish the online theory before class.

Course duration

Online theory first (about 1.5 hours or more, at your own pace), then a short face-to-face practical of at least 30 minutes.

Certificate renewal

Refresh CPR every 12 months. That is the Australian Resuscitation Council and industry recommendation. Most workplaces will not accept a CPR certificate older than one year.

The statement of attainment does not have a legal expiry date, but employers, childcare centres and many licences treat CPR as due annually. Book the yearly refresh before it lapses.

Assessment

You complete both written and practical assessment. Online theory must be finished before the practical.

  • Online multiple-choice theory (do this before class. A larger screen is easier than a phone)
  • CPR on an adult, including AED and recovery position
  • CPR on an infant
